These fellowships enable individuals to engage with areas of research that are new to them, and gain high-quality training that will create the foundation for a successful independent research career. Fellowships are for candidates who either undertook a PhD early in their career and now wish to refresh their research skills, or have recently completed a PhD and wish to explore a new research field or environment, as well as to gain the skills that may help them answer their longer-term research vision. The scheme may be suitable for clinicians who are due to complete their higher degree or are no more than two years from the date of their PhD viva by the full application deadline, and clinicians who graduated with a MB or PhD or have achieved a high-quality PhD in a relevant subject, either during or before commencing their initial medical, veterinary or dental degree.
Fellowships are tenable for two to four years, with total costs typically ranging between £250,000 and £400,000. Awards cover salary and may include research expenses, support to attend scientific meetings, a flexible funding and inflation allowance, and public engagement costs.
