Mobility grants to establish and develop specific, jointly defined social science and humanities research collaborations between researchers in Newton Fund countries and the UK.
Maximum value: £ 20,000
Application deadline: 15/03/2017
The British Academy (BA) is the UK’s national organisation for the humanities and social sciences. Its role is to inspire, recognise and support excellence in the humanities and social sciences, throughout the UK and internationally, and to champion their role and value. It functions as a Fellowship, a learned society, a funding body and a national forum for the humanities and social sciences.
The Newton Fund is a £375 million development assistance fund operated by the UK’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to develop science and innovation partnerships that promote the economic development and welfare of developing countries. It will distribute £75 million a year for five years, beginning 2014/15, and the intention is that UK funding is matched by partner countries.
These Newton Mobility Grants last for one year, covering all disciplines within the social sciences and humanities. They are intended to initiate both new collaborative partnerships, between scholars who have not previously worked together, and new initiatives between scholars who have collaborated in the past. The aims of the Mobility Grants are to:
- Strengthen research capacity of the partner countries – by facilitating training and skill transfer from the UK to partner countries.
- Support excellent research – by linking the best researchers in the UK with the best researchers in partner countries and providing support for collaborative research.
- Establish long term research links – between both partners to ensure sustainable research capacity in partner countries and benefit to the UK research community in the longer term.
This scheme requires two applicants, one from the UK and one based overseas. Both should hold a PhD or be able to demonstrate equivalent research experience, and hold permanent or fixed-term contracts in eligible universities or research institutes for the duration of the award. Both applicants must be competent in oral and written English.
Applications are made online through the e-GAP2 application system.
