EPSRC Programme Grants

Grants available to provide funding to research groups in the UK to address research challenges. Focus is on support of a number of related research activities addressing one strategic research theme.

Programme Grants can be awarded for a period of up to six years duration.Areas of research supported are:

  • Engineering
  • Information Communication Technologies
  • Mathematics
  • Physical Sciences
Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be research groups based in the UK. Applicants are required to discuss their suitability for programme grant funding with an identified EPSRC contact before submitting an outline application via Je-S.

Terms and Conditions

Outline proposals are assessed by an internal EPSRC panel at batch meetings. Successul applicants at this stage will have a track record of being award significant research funding through EPSRC already and will be able to demonstrate that they have previously successfully managed similar large-scale activities. Successful applicants will be invited to submit full proposals within a few days of this meeting.

Programme Grant proposals are assessed against the following criteria:

  • National Importance
  • Added value
  • Overall vision and Ambition
  • Leadership quality
  • Management strategy
  • Impact
  • Advocacy for Engineering and the Physical Sciences

Full proposals are expert peer reviewed and prioritised, applicants will have the opportunity to respond to reviewer comments. Applicants will be invited for interview.

Application Procedure

Applicants are required to discuss their suitability for programme grant funding with an identified EPSRC contact before submitting an outline application via the Joint electronic submission Je-S system.

Pre-outline stage information must be sent to the relevent contact for discussion, this includes:

  • Reason for research requiring funding in this financial year.
  • How the research relates to other funded programme grants.
  • Track records and international standing of the research participants.
  • A summary of the research vision.
  • A description of the national importance of the research.
  • How the research relates to and compliments EPSRC’s research areas and strategies.

Only one outline proposal must be submitted even if the proposal is multi-institutional. A case for support is also required to be submitted at this stage. This must be a maximum of four pages and include information under the following headings:

  • Track record and international benchmarking
  • Vision and ambition
  • Added value and synergy
  • Inter-relation of research projects
  • National importance
  • Management and monitoring
  • Resources
  • Impact

Outline proposals are assessed at batch meetings which take place every two months in February, April, June, August, October and December. Outline proposals must be received by the last Friday of the month proceeding the next batch meeting. Invitations to submit full proposals are sent within a few days of the batch meeting and must be submitted within 10 weeks.

Full proposals must be submitted using Je-S (one application is required even if the proposal is multi-institutional). This must include information on the start date, collaboration agreements and a user engagement strategy. A case for support, management strategy, justification of resources, two page work plan, equipment business case and pathways to impact summary are also required.

Projects are expected to start within three months of the final application interview.
