ESRC Research Grants

Economic and Social Research Council

Grants are available to eligible UK institutions to enable individuals or research teams to undertake anything from a standard research project through to a large-scale survey and other infrastructure or methodological development. The project subject area must fall within the ERSC’s remit.

Maximum value:£ 800,000

Application deadline:None specified

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) research grants aim to provide funding to UK higher education institutions and eligible research organisations to allow individuals or research teams to carry out a wide range of research activities, from a standard research project through to a large-scale survey and other infrastructure or methodological development.

Applicants are free to concentrate on any research area as long as it falls within the ESRC’s remit and proposals may draw from the wider sciences provided that the social sciences represent more than half of the research focus and effort. Awards are available for a period of up to five years and can be for basic, applied or strategic research.

Proposals should ensure that they:

  • Will be of interest, significance and relevance to a wider audience than that of the host institution.
  • Clearly demonstrate their utility to a broad community of researchers.

It is possible to submit a proposal for two or more linked projects, provided that the relationship between them is properly explained and justified.

Eligibility Criteria

Applications are invited from individuals and research teams working in (though not necessarily as established members of) UK higher education institutions, ESRC sponsored research institutes or approved independent research organisations.

The ESRC also welcomes applications from international co-investigators on proposals.

Full terms and conditions are available in the ESRC funding guidelines.

Application Procedure

There is an open call for research proposals under this scheme, there is no deadline and applications can be submitted at any time.

Applicants must submit applications through the Research Councils’ Joint Electronic Submission System (Je-S).

Applicants who are unsure whether their research is suitable for ESRC funding can obtain further information from the ESRC website http://www.esrc.ac.uk/funding/guidance-for-applicants/is-my-research-suitable-for-esrc-funding/or should email the ESRC for guidance.

ESRC aims to announce the majority of decisions within 26 weeks of receiving the proposal, although this is dependant on receiving sufficient good quality peer review comments within the necessary timescale.
